Day 1 - October 15, 2008: Kuching
We arrived in the afternoon and checked in to our hostel - the Singgahsana Lodge.
The taxi driver warned us against going to Bako because of the big waves this time of year.
This was the corridor outside our lunch place - Life Cafe.
Inside, we had lamb and rice. Quite good.
Almost as soon as we came out of the cafe, we heard a lot of banging noises.
I poked my head around the corner and found these tinsmiths, stripping bits of metal from old objects.
It was a pleasant surprise to find the trade still alive here in Kuching.
We browsed the shops nearby. This one sold all manner of rattan stuff.
By the riverside.
I came across these colourful layer cakes at one shop.
The shopkeeper saw me taking pictures and came out to make a sale, so I asked some questions.
He said they do use colouring of course, but they are the "approved" types.
The cakes come in various flavours - watermelon, pandan, chocolate, Horlicks.
They all cost RM10 except one type which cost RM15. I looked at the RM15 one and it looked like
a plain old uncoloured layer cake. I didn't buy any and walked on to find the next ten shops selling
the same cakes.
Many of the shops facing the river sold souvenirs.
The Tua Pek Kong temple.
Our friend Ishak picked us up from the hostel to visit his wife and newborn baby,
so we got to see a bit more of the city. This was the Harmony Archway.
An overhead footbridge on the Satok bridge.
We got a taste of Kuching's rush hour traffic, which wasn't too bad, really.
Ishak said most of the people here are home by about 6pm.
Nobody really stays late at work.
Max meets baby Aidan.
Dinner was at this foodcourt called Top Spot.
It was quite a famous place, but the stall we ate at was quite costly
and the food wasn't that great.
>>> Day 2: Jong's Crocodile Farm and Semenggoh Nature Reserve
