KZ1, built for the 1988 Americas Cup challenge, is one of the biggest sloop-rigged yachts ever built at over 40 metres. A court order forced the cup holder San Diego Yacht Club to face the Kiwi challenger. The American response was to exclude all other challengers and meet the KZ1 with a 60-metre catamaran. The mismatch saw the KZ1 losing 2-0 and legal battles ensued, but in the end, the catamaran victory was allowed to stand. New Zealand has challenged for the Americas Cup three times and in 1995, they won. |
